Bike Fun and Safety Event
Family Fitness, Family Fun!
Every year National Health Center Week celebrates the amazing work America’s health centers are doing in our communities. What better way to celebrate how we are changing and improving the health of our nation than to get out for some family exercise? This year Lynn Community Health Center partnered with Mayor Judith Flanagan Kennedy and the City of Lynn and General Electric to sponsor this family cycling event!
Lynn Parks and Recreation picked up 75 kids and their bicycles from 11 different summer programs and brought them to the event. After a box lunch, every child was fitted with a helmet by volunteers from General Electric, who also checked their bikes and performed small repairs for those who needed them. From there, kids went to one of three obstacle courses set out by Lynn Police Officers, who worked with them on stopping, turning, and riding in a straight line. These exercises are designed to improve skills so that they will be safer riding along city streets.
During the afternoon kids took breaks for other fun activities:
- Firefighter Darrel Murkison was on hand to talk about fire safety. He invited kids to try on firefighting equipment, which he can put in in less than 30 seconds.
- Staff from the Parks and Recreation Deparment held foot races and relay races.
- A K9 Officer from the Essex County Sherriff’s Department and his canine partner demonstrated their skills.
